Looking for software recommendations

I'm not happy with the effect Symantec products had on my last computer. I'd like to get some ideas on anti-virus & security software. I don't want to go bareback so to speak. I've heard good things about McAffee but I could use some info from someone who is currently using a good product. Likewise with browsers. I've seen mention here of FireFox or FoxFire or some sort of flammable vulpine. Is it truly better than the Explorer?
Any relevant info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
