Firefox downloads and installs updates when you open the program, just like your security suite does when you start you computer. Firefox will also warn you if you are surfing that the update is ready, and ask you if you want to install it then.
Microsoft does the same thing with automatic updates, but I can not leave that on with the way I use my computer. Microsoft updates often require a restart, and sometimes that means I lose data from an unexpected update restart.
