The input shaft uses a ball bearing, so if you have some slack, the bearing is worn. Even if the bearings are worn, you should not get a knocking sound from the TC.
If it only happens in first/reverse, then you have a bent/worn transmission reverse gear shift fork. Replace it with a new one.
