Transfer case slack?

The input shaft on my stock t-case on my 57 ffpw has a few degrees of slack, is this normal?

When I'm in first or reverse and accelerate or decelerate, I get a knocking sound and I believe this is where it's coming from. I believe the slack is being taken out causing the knocking sound.

Any thoughts?
