How come my heater switch is red hot?

This is the last re-wiring chore. The heater and switch were disconnected when I bought my truck. It is a '55 C3PW and must have started life with a 6 Volt system. It had been converted to 12V when I got it and I kept it this way and completely rewired it. Now I want to wire the heater up and I am afraid it is meant for a 6V system. What should I do? The two position switch has two wire coils wrapped with ceramic insulators. I assume these are some sort of resistors for the two speeds of the fan. Boy do they get hot when you put a 12V supply accross them. The fan spins happily (if perhaps a bit too fast) but the little coils inside the ceramic housings on the switch glow cherry red. Something tells me this is not so good. How do I fix it without replacing the original switch and heater?
