I just put an original 2 position heater switch in my 64 TWPW and in the first position (slow) the spring / tube does get real hot. It's dissipating the energy that would be going to the heater. In fast mode it dosen't get so hot. I think this is normal but the 12v to 6v is going to develop more heat and possibly burn the switch. I'm sure you could get a 12v to 6v converter to run such items. Perhaps set up a 6v fuse panel. In my old CJ2A Jeep I had a converter to run 12v items.
