I had a similar problem with my W200 this summer.
It turned out that the master cylinder was leaking
into the brake booster, and fliud was then drawn into the
vacum system. This created a large smoke screen
effect every time I applied the bakes...stopped 3 lanes
of rush hour traffic the first time it happened.
Replacing the master cylinder fixed the problem.
