You're right, those are some of the possible problems, but that's what he was proposing to do. Yes, you'd need a check valve and maybe a flame arrester like you can put on oxy/acetylene sets, and yes you'd need to make sure it built up enough pressure to fire. I don't think the matter of building up pressure would really be an issue though, because a 230/251 will run fine with 90 psi of compression, and once the air receiver got charged up, you'd have that much pressure in the tank. The risk would be that until it got up to that pressure you might be pumping an explosive mixture into the receiver. All in all, an external belt-driven compressor with a clutch is certainly the best way to go.
