There is increasing evidence that shows that is exactly what is happening. Oil is no long thought to be from dynosaurs, but from some other source, mineral or plant.
The geologist and oil companies know exactly where the oil is, as stated above, it is polictically unviable to drill for at the preasent time, when prices go higher, the people will demand drilling. Energy savings is vastly superior to just 10 years ago, autos are just a small portion of energy consumption, Solar, which includes wind, nuclear and bio will all play a larger part in the future. The US sits above the worlds largest deposits of coal and oil shale, combined with technologies that we can't even envision yet, petroleum power vehicles will be with us for at least the next hundred years and beyond so get back into the garage and start wrenching...

You're right about that, but based upon inflation, todays fuel costs are less than they were in the 50's and 60's.
