I had to take the diff out to get the axle stub out. I also cleaned out the axle housing and flushed the diff. I found no metal anywhere except that which was trapped between the axle shaft and axle stub in the diff. Yes there could possibly be dammage to the spider gears but I found no metal chips in the housing. I will go through it more carefully this winter as I am thinking of converting to a centered rear axle.
