Hi Tim,
Three season tents are fine in all but the worst conditions. The Troop has 10 Eureka Timberline tents which are 3 season tents. We use them year round and have camped in some very nasty weather. A few years ago we camped at the edge of a lake as the tail of a huricane blew through. I was in awe of the wind and driven rain that night but none of the tents failed. We did have 2 bent poles which support the overhang of the fly but nothing more. They are also good at shedding snow. A very good choice for an all around tent and relatively kid-proof.
Sounds like your instructor was interesting.
