I think you said in the "which tent should I buy" thread that you had been winter camping before....this was our first time, making us the copy cats :-)
We had an Air Force SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) Instructor along with us. He taught the kids a fire starting class and how to build lean-to shelters from tarps. He also taught a beginners navigation course.
4 kids stayed in the shelters and the other 8 stayed in tents. The 4 adults also stayed in a tent.
We rented the tents from the base....we were told they were 4 season canvas tents but they turned out to be 3 season nylon. We found this out the evening before we left and had two choices; cancel the trip or gut it out with what we had. We chose to gut it out and we're all glad that we did!
I can't wait to do it again next year, but we will have better equipment....hopefully.
