I have owned an '82 and an '83 wagon in the past. The transfer case is not a Dana 300. I can't recall the model # but it is a viscous drive to the front axle like a clutch fan. I did not think it would work very well but both of them were superb vehicles and the 4 wheeel drive worked outstanding. A couple of the best I ever owned. In fact I have thought about getting another. My only complaint that I recall is the way the rear hatch was built. When it was raining it would allow water to run inside the rig when it was opened.
