Lubrication

I didn't get anywhere with this post on PW Advertiser so I thought I'd try it here.

I have just jumped into the power wagon pool with the purchase of a '41 1/2 ton. It is very difficult to turn and who knows how long ago it has been since any grease has been put in it's joints. (Kinda like I'm feeling nowadays.) I figure that an oil change and a good grease job wouldn't hurt and may help the steering situation some.

The maintenance manual seems to do a pretty good job of showing me what I have to lube and the kinds of lubricant to use. But the manual was written when the truck was new. Are there better lubricants available today? (E.g., For the front universal and knuckle joint the manual recommends "a medium No. 2 sodium soap grease made from steam cylinder oil stock." Sounds more like an order placed at a Starbucks.)

And as far as motor oil, should I stick with a single 30 weight oil? I don't see me doing too much driving when the temperatures get below 50. Which brings me to my last question about lubrication: If the truck sits for the winter, should I start and run it in place every now and then? Take it for a spin 'round the block?
