trailer lights problem?

I bought the NAPA trailer light wiring kit for my 98 S-10 PU (w/4-wire plug) and a trailer light kit w/turn,stop lightd with all the wiring included. I plugged the NAPA
plug kit to the proper places just as the instructions said to.
I wired the trailer lights just as the instruction said,hooked up the trailer to the truck,made sure the grounds were connected correctly and the plugs connected good. Blinker lights work correctly,the tail-lights are on but, when the brakes are depressed, the lights go off with no brake lights or any lights are on until I let off the brake pedal. Whats wrong?
