Almost all of my trailer problems have been from the following causes.

1. Bad ground. If the setup is relying on the ground via the hitch and ball, it can give unpredictable results. I put on a temp extra ground for good measure. Also double check for corrosion on any grounding points.

2. Pinched or cut wiring, especially around the drop gate or any pivit points.

3. Broken wiring inside the connectors. This one has given me a lot of grief in the past. I use a 6 pin round connector and sometimes one of the wires frays and makes an intermittant connection with another pin or the metal connector casing. This causes problems like the one you described. I have been contimplating going to another connector type. I do not like the 6 pin round connectors.
