I pulled stumps for awhile with my truck. That's too much digging if you have to do very many. My JD backhoe paid for itself the first month I had it, it has pulled a lot of stumps. It really can't "pull" that much of a root, but if you dig a hole in front of the root and then pull the stump forward it works pretty good.

I've heard a lot of stories about my grandpa pulling over cottonwoods with a TD18, some of them were taller than he questimated and he was lucky just to get whipped by the branches when they fell down alongside his crawler.

Neigbor used his Sweptline W200 to pull down a small fir that had hung up when he was falling it. He had cut all the way through and was trying to pull the bottom out from under it. He said it just pivoted on the stump and fell right on his cab, crunched it all in. Bet that was noisy! A little bigger tree would have killed him.

Whenever possible I use a pulley block when I'm winching a tree over, try to keep out of line of the fall just in case.
