The simplest solution is to take a complete Range Rover rear axle and just add it to the extended chassis, and cutting the diff housing off makes no sense. Dont see a drive shaft to it, do you?
I'm sure you could make a 6x6 if you really wanted to, but the philosophy was an extra axle to carry the weight of the water tank - it isn't a big off-road thing. Airfields are mostly flat, even here in the hilly old UK... 8-)
