Jack,
Thanks for the input. I live, I learn. I just wish it wasn't so expensive to learn. Just so you don't think I'm a total fool, the lower end (crank) is expected back from the machine shop tomorrow. New main and rod bearings are expected by thursday. The plan was to remove the ridge and re-ring. Not having the correct tools to measure with is hampering me right now, but I expect to have the correct tools tomorrow. All I can say for now is the ridge is engough to catch you fingernail on. I couldn't venture a guess at what the measurement of the wear is.

I really do believe that this engine has never been re-built. First because of the size of the main/rod bearings found when I took out the crank (appears factory) and the diameter of the bore (measured at the ridge).

The part that really hurts is that I bought this engine running. The plan was to clean it, gasket it, and install it. Unfortunately It has progressed exponentially from the original plan. I think I will heed the advise, not only from you, but from a few other sources and sit down with the machine shop and talk about doing it right. I just don't know if the wallet will stand up to it.
