Brian, I was not voting to weld the thing, he was just asking if there was anything you could try.

One of the more interesting repairs I saw once was a cylinder block that had thrown a rod through the skirt of the block. The fellow had replaced the damaged parts, and fashioned a cover plate made of wood with an inner tube gasket. This wooden cover was held in place with bolts that he ran into tapped holes drilled in the skirt of the block.

He also used aluminum foil to shim rod bearings, fitting them by hand, meaning no measurements and no plastigage. His stuff ran well for years, even if it seemed a little scary. He ran flathead Dodge sixes on a sawmill, too.
