The early M37's from the first production run had a short shift lever. The B1's, made in the late 50's and early 60's had a slightly different transmission and a shift lever that sticks up above the level of the dash, which can be easily seen thru the window (this assumes nothing has been modified over the years). There are a few other subtle differences but they are hard to spot. The later ones seem to rust worse than the early run due (supposedly) to a change in the steel alloy. There is essentially no functional difference in an early or late model regarding performance.
