Smoking 230 in M37

What parts of the 230 engine most often cause smoke from the exhaust pipe? Rings?Valve guides? Burning rat in the muffler? The thing runs and powers great but when I run up the rpm's she smokes like hell. Blue and white smoke. Blue at power on and white at 1500 to 2000 rpm's. Where do you guys think I should start? (318 V-8)? This is jock poking around for ideas thanks.
