Transfer Case Chain

My truck has the full time dana 44 front axle and the full time transfer case. I'm curious about when I lock it into 4-Low, when I'm crawling up a large embankment or anything where a tire is capable of losing traction, I hear a noise coming from underneath the truck, and then the truck starts slipping, it cannot climb anymore.

I can't think of a way to describe the sound. But can a transfer case chain slip under severe load??

The tranny, T-case and chain are completely untouched and the truck has 196,000 miles.
