A ballast resistor in the primary ignition circuit that lowers voltage after the engine is started to reduce wear on ignition components. as for reversing the terminals,is this point type or electronic, if on a point type it should not matter, if electronic, it is probably shorting the ecu out or the pick up coil, are you having a no fire condition?
