Thanks for the kind words. It’s just hard for me to see myself as a veteran I guess. I know that at anytime I could have been called upon to go over there if the Air Force saw the need for me to go. And had they, I would have went with pride.
Don’t get me wrong I think what I was doing was important for the country and future combat, just not the war at the time. During the war I was a lab weenie. I built and tested things for one of the Air Force’s weapons research facilities. Most things I worked on will never come to be “weapons systems”, but some will. One of the programs I worked on was developing a laser for the soon-to-be-tested Airborne Laser (ABL). It’s a converted 747 with a laser that can shoot down missiles. (See link) When the ABL actually gets used in combat, I know that I’ll finally feel like I did my part.
