Some of the old 2Cycles can run away with no problem.
Some had emergency shut downs for the blower you pulled a cable in cab and a plate would close over the blower intake to stop air.
Some were air operated shut downs.
Old Detroit i had 2 times i started it was an air start system and it started backwards.
Diesel made a huge change in early 70's late 60's to prevent these problems.
Most of the runaway diesels i have heard about were 2 stroke or 2 cycles.
