Leaky rings seldom get so bad as to make NO compression. These two holes have a 'siamesed' cylinder wall, only 1/4 inch of headgasket between them. It get pushed back and forth until it lets go. Last one I did I center punched a row of dimples in the head to grip the gasket- the head, NOT THE BLOCK. Worked good so far. Whatever you THINK the problem, the first step of repair is to remove the head anyway, then the problem will be obvious.
