I worked in the tire shop for the U.S. Border Patrol at the El Paso Sector Mechanics shop for one year while waiting to go to the academy to become a agent, primarily Heavy truck & Equipment main.tand the tires for 400 vehicles mostly 4wds most vehicles carried 2 to 3 extra spares on any given day and needed all of them some maintenance vehicles on the mountain repeater sites could destroy 10 ply e range tires in three days and I once during a flurry of activity( not paying attention)the right size tire tried to mount a 235/85r16 to 16.5 the result was a largeexplosion where the side wall ruptured from the center of the tire strait down to the tread destroying a brand new tire and bending the rim to the point where it was unrepairable I believe this was for a 1 ton ford van. I am no expert and thank goodness the tire was locked down as I would have been injured I believe I am no expert nor do I have the tecniqual Info but I do believe that the right size tire and rim are the only safe way to go Just my.02cents hope this helps.
