When we had our big Virgina Lake Complex Fire (72,000 acers) I went around 72 hours straight befor I could take a break! Started at 1:00 AM Monday after watching the lightning storm all night. Around Wednesday night I got to lay on the porch for a break when the State DNR Firefighters showed up to relieve us. It went on for about 2 weeks and I had 90 hours into fighting it in 5 days. We got a coffie break somewhere in there. They could not pay us for most of the hours because you can't work over 24 in a row! But when you are saving your own place it dose not matter what it takes to win. I am not a Structural Fire Fighter I am a Volenteer Wildland Fire Fighter 1st responce team for our area. Mark H.
