I would be more concerned at this point in identifying the cause of the failure. Did the engine overheat? Broken rings can point to several problems. As for myself, I like a light coat of oil on everything. It doesn't need to get sloppy/drippy with the oil, just make sure that everything is coated. There is lots of info on the net complete with cool drawings and such for ring installation. I have included a couple.
