There seems to be a consensus among experienced
folk that balancing the crank is good. I have
been advised to inform the shop to balance at
3000 rpm, because otherwise they might unwittingly
shoot for dynamic balance at a higher rpm (typical
of the average modern motor they work on). Other key
improvements include using stronger rod bolts, and
there's some way to siamese oil pumps that will
give you 50+ pounds of oil pressure, but I haven't
got the details on that yet.
I think if you put on headears with 1 1/2" tubes
a high performance muffler, you could realize 8-10
more HP at 2000rpm and 20-25 more ft/lbs
of torque through the peak torque range.
