I'd be willing to bet that removing the thermostat doesn't help - unless the thermostat itself is defective. Sounds like something is blocked up somewhere. I found chunks of foam rubber inside my block when I took it apart, you just never know. Make sure your fan shroud exists and is properly positioned. Flush and back flush the block and radiator. Look at the water pump - if they turn they are usually ok. Check the thermostat operation in a pan of water on the stove - make sure it opens at whatever temp it's supposed to.
