I am interested in M37s, but I'm not a mechanic, am I wasting my time?

From everything I read about these old trucks, it seems you have to be a full blown auto mechanic to enjoy this hobby. Is this true? I would like to own an M37 someday, but if it requires knowing how to rebuild engines, I don't know! Can anyone help me?

(I realize I can take the truck to a garage, but I don't know of anyone in my area who has experience with old vehicles such as these)
