Horsepower on the '57 & '58 dodge 230 car motor was rated at 138@4000RPM with a single barrel WW3-159 stromberg carb and 8.0-1 compression... bone stock. In '59 it dropped to 135@3600RPM. I'm thinking longivity problems at 4000. '56 was rated at 131@3600RPM with a 2 barrel and 7.6-1 C/R.
Easiest way to pull more horsies out of the flattie is to mill the head to boost compression. I have some info out of a 1963 book on hotrodding that says to mill .070 off the '55 and earlier for 8.1-1, .060 off the 56 for 8.5-1, .060 off the 57 & 58 for 8.8-1. If you're running a 241 cut .060 for a 7.8-1, on the 251 cut .065 for a 7.7-1, on the 265 cut .065 for a 7.8-1. A two barrel B&B, Stromberg or Carter BBD1¼ on a 2 barrel adaptor makes these much nicer too. If you can hog out the carb intake hole you can increase your F/A flow also. For oil flow increase, chamfer all the crank and bearing oil holes.it can be done with a drill and/or stone. NOTE: Be real careful & DON'T nick the crank outside of the chamfer
