I couldn't believe the noise level (or lack there of) either! I went down to the dealership to 'look' at one a few weeks ago and started it up. Nice and quiet at idle but still sounds like a Cummins when you mash the go pedal. A guy started an '02 6 trucks down and it made the '03 sound even quieter. Nice truck! Just have to wait until fall so I can get my finances in order...sigh.
I agree it's a much better 'work' engine than the the new PS V8 diesel. You need low end grunt to tow heavy things and the Cummins has LOTS of that.
The only reason I would choose a 12v for a transplant is lack of computers. And you can 'BOMB' a 12v to get the HP and torque numbers you want without electronics. I've heard you can put a mechanical pump on a 24v and might even be able to convert the new echo over to straight mechanical. Which would make them a good candidate for an older truck as well. It's all a question of $. As a buddy of mine who drag raced used to say, "How fast can you afford to go?".
