Best advice I was ever given on new engine start up was from a Detroit Deisel mechanic...pre-heat your oil. I've done it before with a new five gallon, meticulously cleaned pail. Get your engine totally ready to run, heat the oil in the pail using the best means available to you...you may want to wait until the wife heads out for groceries before you resort to the kitchen stove! I have a portable gas camping burner that's perfect for this but be sure you have a funnel & welding gloves etc ready to handle the very hot container.
Cold start-ups are hard on any engine, & heating the oil has huge benefits.
