I had a old man tell me once that the lead in the gas left a residue on the valve seats lubricating the seats. When forced to switch to a Un-Leaded gas, engine manufacturers started using hardened seats because of the missing lubrication. He had stated running an un-leaded fuel thru an engine head designed for leaded fuel would cause the valves to recede into the head due to not typically having a hardened valve seat.
This was the advise of a old mechanic no longer with us. If it is acurate or not I am not sure.
