You don't need to remove the steering knuckle flanges to insert the front axle and universal assemblies, but you DO need to remove them to replace the upper and lower trunion pin bearings and races. These are really important. The lower races get dented from sitting or use and they rust if any water has gotten in. You really need to check them while the front axle is apart. Gordon's service manual tells all. Good Luck!
