If this is the 54" wide tailgate, I believe it should just be a matter of moving the chain brackets. I can not remember if they need to be moved up or down. I think this can be done on the tailgate, but it may need to be done on the box itself. There was also a tailgate that was about 49" wide. If yours is an original, without embossing, it is probably a 54".
Here is how the numbers are found in the parts manuals for the early Power-Wagon:
December 1945 Preliminary parts list #D-11091 - tailgate #1095 626
February 1948 Series WDX parts list #D-12004 - tailgate #1095 626
October 1949 parts list Supplement #D-13156 - tailgate #1095 626
July 1951 parts list #D-13864 - tailgate #1097 923
July 1951 pats list #D-13864 also shows the pickup box side and front panels changing at this point to the embossed 3-stake pocket B-3 series.
#1097 923 tailgate is not shown in the 1951 parts list as having never being used before because it had been in use for a couple of years on the 116" and 126" wheelbase 2-wheel drive trucks, along with the narrower #1097 917 and the shorter #1276 394 tailgates.
