It main purpose was for cool drinking water. Most were hung off a handy place, such as the raditor filler tube, but the air passing the bag did a better job cooling there especially when the vehicle was not moving fast. Probably little effect cooling the engine. After it's soaked and used once or twice, not much canvas taste.
