I would suspect that the main danger in smoking around gas fumes would come when you provide an open flame to light the cigarette.
Way back when, I was working at a gas station. It was my day off and I rode my motorcycle in to refill. I had the pump nozzle in my hand and was filling the tank when POP - The nozzle was still in my hand, but the filler hose had came loose from the nozzle head and was furiously pumping gas all over me and the motorcycle. I was in shock for about 3 seconds while I tried to comprehend what was happening. I can remember the gas sizzling and steaming up as it hit the header pipes of the motorcycle. I pivited and shut the gas off at the pump. I was standing in a large pool of gas next to a sizzling gas soaked motorcycle wearing gas soaked clothing.
The other guys found some pants and a shirt for me to wear home.
It wasn't till I changed my gas soaked cloths that I realized how close I came to being a torch that day.
I was just lucky and the Lord must have been looking out for me.
Best Wishes
