I agree with the previous posts. White oak is the way to go. Finished thickness should be 13/16ths.
The wood is mounted to the top of the rear crossmember. There is no angle or sill covering the exposed board ends (none up front either). On the first series bed, the rear crossmember is heavy channel. The rear crossmember on the second and third series beds is stamped sheet metal. On the first series bed, the center tailgate hinge is inletted into the two center boards below the center skid strip. If I remember correctly, the second and third series bed center skid strip stops short of the center tailgate hinge and has it's own bolt hole, but others with this type of bed can confirm.
On all bed styles start with 96", and be prepared to trim 1/4" off the length. Frequently the 96" boards are too long and will rub the paint off the tailgate. In some cases, they will even prevent the tailgate from closing.
