Bent axle retainer

I bent the axle retainer, near the large ball and socket of the front axle, on a stump. Since it was leaking I decided to remove the eight bolts or so and see how badly it was damaged. When I took it off all kinds of brown lubricant came flowing out. Can I repair this without removing the wheel and hub assemblies? It looks like there is a gasket that I broke. What was the brown lube, was it from inside of the axle or just grease from the fitting above it?
