As a certified welder I mostly agree with the other opinions already expressed here. Buy a big name machine for the ease of parts availability. You can never have too big a plasma cutter, and for your use a small (90-130) amp MIG will be perfect. Anything thicker than 1/8" to 3/16" is better suited to stick welding anyway. I've recently been making a lot of repairs to farm implements where the manufacturer used MIG to weld heavy (3/8" on up) plate and the weld simply tears apart indicating almost no penetration.
