Hi,
Sounds like it needs to be rebuilt at a minimum...try this:
put in manual low (1st, not drive). Does it move? Try reverse? Does it move?
If it will move in manual low, but not low (drive), and has a grinding sound, I'd suspect the overruning clutch and it has probably destroyed the trans already (broken case). In reverse or manual low, the rear band holds the drum, in drive low, the overrunning clutch holds the drum. This overrunning clutch is all metal, springs, rollers, etc.
A whineing sound might be a plugged filter, pretty easy to put the pan and change the fluid and filter. Ton's-o-crud in the pan is a bad sign, a teaspoon-ful is normal on a high mileage vehicle.
There are plenty of in-vehicle tests that can be done to diagnose (pressure tests, etc). A rebuild kit is pretty cheap, like $70, and is not hard to do, only a couple special tools needed (snap ring pliers, slide hammer, feeler gauges). I did my first at 15 years old. A good manual is cheap also, like $15. Try www.naparts.com, that's who I use. They are in Souix City, Iowa.
good luck,
mark
