Thanks Frank for the Warning. Because Halon leaves no residue, I think that the only places where it's still used is in computer room's. For most applications a good multi purpose extinguisher (one that is rated for class A,B and C fires) such as Purple K or most any other dry chemical type will do. Also for those who do have a fire extinguisher, if it's more than 2 years old, take a look at it. A couple of things to check are: Does the gauge still show that it's charged?; Is the cylinder in good shape, no dents or gouges or rust?; Is the pull ring present and sealed?; Check it's weight. If it's a 5lb extinguisher, does it still weight 5lb.s? For extinguishers that are more than 6 years old, I would suggest that they be taken to someplace that services fire protection equipment for servicing. IACW NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency) regulations fire extinguishers are supposed to be inspected monthly, annually, every six years, and with cylinder types, every 12 years. There are some exceptions but this covers most of the common ones in use. Another thing is that the inspections are supposed to be documented, the tag that is found near the top on many extinguishers. Think about this the next time you're in someplace like Walmart and you see an extinguisher hanging on the wall someplace. Take a look at the tag and see when the last time someone initialed off for the monthly inspection. I don't think it happens much at stores and other such places, but in repair shops like where I work, sometimes someone will be doing a cutting job with the oxy-acetylene torch and the fire guard will be there with the fire extinguisher. This is all good, except that sometimes the fire extinguisher doesn't get put back where it belongs. This can be almost as bad as putting a used one back up on the wall. Hey it happens. Taking care of our equipment, and being safe in the things we do will help us to be able to enjoy our toys. Robert
