draining gear oil

I am preparing to change axle gears,and need to drain the gear oil from the rear axle housing.The front went easy,as there was a 1/8NPT drain fitting in the housing.Is removing a stud from the bottom of the housing the only way to drain the rear?I can't find any other drains on it. Dave
