I did mine
It was the first major rebuild that I'd done since highschool ( about 9....25 years ago ). Pick you machine shop well, I brought mine to the best recomended one I could find and ended up bringing it back to them twice to redo things I didn't like. A good give away is when you go to a machine shop and the guy says "Oh it just a flathead", grab your block and slowly back out and leave. I bought almost all of my engine parts from VPW as Steve in parts was a wealth of knowledge during my rebuild. The rebuild was straight forward, though I almost left out a wristpin clip ( got distracted by a phone call ). I went and got the crank and assembly balanced and put in stainless exhaust valves. You'll get alot of opinions on what lubricant to use when assembling the engine!, I used Lubriplate Motor Assembly Grease #105. Don't worry about the water tube, if you can't get it out the machine shop can when they boil out the block. You can shop around for the best deal on parts but as I stated earlier that VPW was a great source of info and their prices on engine parts was pretty much the same as other venders. The rebuild was the most enjoyable part of my M-37 restro ( I'll take grease over sanding any day!) being that most of my engine repair work up to that point has been water pumps and a occasional timing chain. Also remember,You have the guys on this forum to fall back on with your rebuild questions. OH yeah! and big bottle of Jim Bean helps also!.. you know incase you have to sterilize parts.lol
