It's hard to say how hot it got. The temp sending unit was not submersed in coolant anymore after the plug dropped out, so I'm not sure what any temperature reading would mean. The only heat making it to the sending unit was coming from the air in the water jacket and the heat being transferred from the engine block to the sending unit by way of the metal-to-metal contact between the sending unit and the block.
Anyway, when I shut the engine off, the gage was somewhat beyond the 212 mark, probably around 230 degrees. After I shut it off, of course, it kept climbing, and finally the needle pegged out hard against its stop, I believe. If I had to guess, it was probably about 270 degrees, give or take. That's assuming that the gage is accurate in that temperature range.
