For the present, I would like to keep the drums, but eventually I may buy the disc brake setup. As I said, I don't believe the linings were ruined by any stretch of the imagination, so I don't believe I've lost any money there.
I know that I should not have to hammer any drums on. However, I believe the lining material must come in standard thicknesses, because when I replaced the shoes 10 years ago, I had the same problem getting the drums installed. However, I did not have any problems with leakage. The first time I took the truck out after that, I had to keep it in first gear for a couple of miles until the shoes wore themselves in, because the shoes were so tight. After that, the brakes worked great, and I never had a problem. I've heard of this machine you're talking about, but I don't know anyone who does that anymore, either, so I figured as long as I could get the system together, it would work fine, just as it did 10 years ago.
Anyway, thanks for the response. Maybe I will jack up the truck and run it in the garage for a while until the linings all wear in, and then I can adjust the shoes outward until I get the cups inside the wheel cylinders to position themselves properly and seal. At that point, I'll bleed the system.
Thanks,
Matt
